Toughest NFL Draft Projections
posted in Houston Texans, 2007 NFL Draft, NFL |As note in the article about the Minnesota Vikings draft projections, several teams are harder than others to project. Another team that is difficult to get a handle on is the Houston Texans. The Texans have several pressing needs, but lack a second round pick. Therefore it is vital that they hit with their first pick and fulfill a need at the same time.
The WR spot opposite of standout Andre Johnson is barren. Jerome Mathis and Kevin Walter are the leading candidates right now, but for Matt Schaub to succeed, he needs a relaible second target. Ted Ginn Jr. makes sense as a field stretching player to allow Johnson to work in the middle. However, is he value at #10?
The cornerback position is also barren next to Dunta Robinson. DeMarcus Faggins and Dexter Wynn are currently in line for the spot, which would be a huge liability on a defense that struggled last season. The top CB may still be on the board here - Leon Hall or Darrelle Revis, and could be the target.
The Texans made a great pick with 2006 defensive rookie of the year, Demeco Ryans, in Round 2 of last season’s draft. Despite that selection, the Texans have one of the worst linebacking corps in the league due to outside linebacker Shantee Orr and Morlon Greenwood. Unfortunately, there is unlikely to be value at the outside linebacking position at Pick #10.
The Texans may be best served to trade down - not addressing one of the above needs will make it more difficult for them to succeed in 2007. However, unless a player like LaRon Landry or Adrian Peterson unexpectedly slips, the Texans may not have the leverage needed to make a move.
