Vanderbilt WR Earl Bennett Scouting Report
Height: 6-1, Weight: 202, Draft Grade: 84

Strengths: Earl Bennett runs smoothes routes and gets out of the break with ease…was essentially the only above average offensive weapon at Vanderbilt and was still putting up phenomenal numbers while being game planned for every single week…Earl Bennett appears to have the willingness to continue to work on and improve his overall game…in today’s NFL more than ever wide receivers must run crisp, precise routes—Earl Bennett is one of the better route runners in the 2008 WR class…following the departure of former 1st round selection Jay Cutler the Vanderbilt QB situation has been shaky, and Earl Bennett performed nonetheless…Earl Bennett has the potential to be an excellent intermediate route runner as well as a adequate deep threat, so he could be a solid addition to many offensive schemes currently deployed in the National Football League…

Weaknesses: To fulfill his pro potential Earl Bennett must become a more physical WR down the field as well as at the line of scrimmage…he has solid hands, but not spectacular, so he could use some improvement in that area…Earl Bennett does not possess the ideal frame that scouts salivate over…Bennett also does not possess that top notch speed that would avoid concerns whether or not he can truly become a game breaker…Earl Bennett will not help an NFL franchise in the kick or punt return game…the major concern is that Earl Bennett’s ceiling is only that he will develop into a "good" receiver and that he has very little chance to become a truly special receiver…

Overall:
Earl Bennett caught the eye of scouts early in the 2006 season and has continued to progress over the duration of his collegiate career. Earl Bennett may take a page out of the Giants game plan that they utilized on 2006 2nd round draft selection Steve Smith, initially Earl Bennett may be best suited as the slot receiver and then advancing his game to make him a solid #2 WR. Bennett is one of the more NFL ready receivers in the group, but questions about his athleticism will limit his draft status.
