Where USC QB Mark Sanchez will land is the biggest question of the 2009 NFL Draft

1. Detroit Lions- Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

The debate begins right at the top where the Detroit Lions seems to have narrowed their sights on either QB Matthew Stafford or one of the two top offensive tackles Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe. The Lions have explored options in trading for Broncos jettisoned QB Jay Cutler and have explored the option of trading for Brady Quinn, but it would appear as if they are not going to complete either deal so they remain with their current dilemma. With Mark Sanchez stock rising, the odds of him sliding down to the 20th selection seems quite slim. There are other options at tackle that will be available with the Lions second 1st round selection, but they realize their QB situation is a mess and they are going to fix that problem before they continue their rebuilding process. Matthew Stafford has a cannon for an arm, can make all the throws you would like, and actually publicly says he would like to play for the Detroit Lions, so the projection here is Matthew Stafford going #1 overall to the Lions.

2. St. Louis Rams- Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

The St. Louis Rams have some in their front office who are angling to select WR Michael Crabtree, the talented WR would make an excellent replacement for former Rams standout Torry Holt and with their 2008 2nd round draft pick Donnie Avery would make for a dynamic pair of young receivers moving forward. Although this selection is appealing, the smart move would be for the Rams to acquire the offensive tackle they have needed and salivated over for quite sometime. Remember, just one year ago the Rams had offensive tackle Jake Long #1 on their Big Board, but seeing him go with the 1st overall selection they selected defensive end Chris Long instead. Losing longtime All-Pro offensive tackle Orlando Pace this past off-season increases the need at the position more than ever for the franchise. It is believed that the Rams GM actually prefers Eugene Monroe. They are desperately trying to trade down, but if they stay put, the projection is the offensive tackle that scouts around the league seem to prefer, and that is not Eugene Monroe, but offensive tackle out of Baylor Jason Smith.

Is LSU's Tyson Jackson a top 10 pick?

1. Detroit Lions - Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

Coming off the worst season in NFL history, the Lions have a potential franchise changing pick here. The options are numerous, as the Lions need help at virtually every position. 2008 first rounder Gosder Cherilus struggled and does not look like a future NFL left tackle, which would make Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe very enticing here. Aaron Curry just may be the best player in the draft and would finally solve the problem at middle linebacker for the Lions. However, in the end, look for the Lions, particularly Martin Mayhew to reach for the big splash - QB Matthew Stafford. The Lions off-season moves, jettisoning Jon Kitna and not re signing Dan Orvlosky, seems to point to them using this selection to find their new QB. While this may not be the right selection, as there were concerns over Stafford's mediocre collegiate production, his strong arm and outstanding intelligence will lead the Lions to place the faith of their franchise in him.

2. St. Louis Rams - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

The Rams have needed to find the long term answer at left tackle for several drafts now and have been unable. They missed out on Jake Long last season and had to deal with even more injuries from Orlando Pace. Pace has since been released, causing a gaping hole at left tackle. Their line was dismal in 2008, allowing 45 sacks and forcing Marc Bulger to the sidelines. Jason Smith is an athletic, former tight end with Pro Bowl left tackle ability. Virginia's Eugene Monroe may be a bit more polished, but Smith's upside is hard to ignore here. The Rams may be enticed by Michael Crabtree, as Torry Holt and Drew Bennett will not be back. New head coach Steve Spagnuolo may covet the skill of linebacker Aaron Curry, but he will recognize that selecting Smith is the right thing to do, as the team must rebuild their offensive line to return to prominence.
